The Plus Ones

Melbourne's best events, reviewed

Port Phillip Mussel Festival

A Mussel Festival, I hear you say. Easier to explain when it’s written — the number of people who said ‘but you’re kinda scrawny’ when I explained what I was doing…

The invite highlighted the event as a seafood street party and  I really didn’t know what to expect. As I ventured down to the South Melbourne Market my anticipation and FOMO anxiety kicked into gear as I read Theresa’s texts attesting to the event’s awesome-ness…

The actual event was held in the grounds of Claypots Evening Star and boy were we in for a feast-treat!

Huge vats of punch

The Claypots team had cooked up a storm and plate after plate of seafood goodness was shipped out for all to gorge. The veritable seafood buffet of stingray, salmon, oysters, prawns, fish tacos, calamari and octopus left us in a daze and had we pushed it we could have easily slipped into a glorious seafood coma.

More seafood than you could shake a (tiny) stick at

If this wasn’t enough, round after round of wine, Czech beer and chalices filled with cocktails were also on offer!

How had the Port Phillip Mussel Festival come about? It was a part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival and restaurateur Rene Goskin decided to put on a feast for the masses. It wasn’t a seafood street party it was seafood heaven!

Thank you to the team at Claypots for making this a night to remember.
